Wesley “Max” Walser is the current Chairman of the Davidson County Board of Commissioners.  He was born on April 15, 1940, in Davidson County.  He and his wife, Peggy, have been married for 41 years and reside in the Arnold community.  They have two children, Wesley Max Walser III, and Lee Kendall Melomo, and have two grandchildren.  They are  members of Grace Episcopal Church in Lexington.

Chairman Walser obtained an Associate in Arts degree from Brevard Junior College in 1960, a Bachelor of Arts degree from Pfeiffer College in 1962, a Master of Education degree in Administration and Supervision from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill in 1966, a Master of Arts in Teaching (Biology) from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill in 1968, and a Doctorate of Education degree from Duke University in 1973. Commissioner Walser’s career in education began as a teacher and coach with the Forsyth County school system in 1962.  Throughout his career, he has served as Deputy Superintendent for Davidson County Schools, Science Supervisor in the North Carolina State Department of Instruction, Adjunct Professor at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill and Virginia Polytechnic Institute,  Principal of Murray Elementary School in Fort Bragg, North Carolina, Superintendent of Davidson County Schools, and most recently as interim Superintendent for Montgomery County Schools from 2001-2002.  

Chairman Walser was elected to serve on the Board of the Davidson Electric membership Corporation and Energy United in 1976, and is currently serving his tenth consecutive term on the board.  Commissioner Walser was appointed by Governor Jim Martin to the North Carolina State Textbook Commission to serve a four year term, and was then appointed by Governor Jim Hunt to serve as chairman of the commission. He is a current member of the Davidson County Community College Board of Trustees and Uptown Lexington.

Chairman Walser is serving his second consecutive term as Davidson County Commissioner, having been elected in December, 2002.  His term expires in December, 2010.
