Interested in becoming a pollworker?
 

The Davidson County Board of Elections can offer you the opportunity to serve your community. The Board of Elections hires as many as 400 dedicated, civic-minded individuals to work as precinct workers each election day.

Why am I needed?
Without precinct officials, elections could not be held. Precinct officials identify voter eligibillty, assist voters when needed, and assure that all election laws of North Carolina are followed.

Am I eligible?
YES, if you are:
A registered voter in Davidson County
   "...must be a registered voter and resident of the county in which the precinct is located, of good repute, and able to read and write.”

Form may be completed online, but must be printed out, signed and mailed to Board of Elections (address below).
Not an elected official
   “No person shall be eligible to serve as a precinct official...who holds an elective office under the government of the United States or North Carolina or any political subdivision thereof.”
Not a candidate
   “No person shall be eligible to serve...who is a candidate for nomination or election.”
Not an officer of any party or party organization
   “No person shall be eligible to serve...who holds any office in a state, congressional district, county or precinct political party or political organization, or who is a manager or treasurer for any date…”

*  NOTE:  Certain relatives are prohibited from serving together: Spouse, child, spouse of child, sister or brother. Also, no precinct official who is the wife, husband, mother, father, son, daughter, brother or sister of any candidate for nomination may serve as a precinct official during any primary or election in which such candidate participates.

When am I needed?
*    Primary Elections are held on first Tuesday after first Monday in May (even years).
*    General Elections are held on first Tuesday after first Monday in November (even years).
*    Municipal Elections are held first Tuesday after first Monday in November (odd years).
*    Special Elections (only if issues have been filed) would be on a Tuesday...

Where will I work?
Many public buildings, such as public schools, government buildings, libraries, churches and local Fire Departments are used as polling locations. Efforts are made to place you at a convenient location whenever possible. Precinct Judges (Chief, Democrat, Republican) are required by law to work in the precinct in which they reside.

Will I be Paid
?
YES; rates are as follows, dependent on job:

Chief Judge                 $120.00              $15.00
D/R Judge                    $110.00              $15.00
Assistant                      $105.00              $15.00

What do I have to
?

*
    Attend mandatory training sessions.
*    Meet at polling place Monday Night before Election.
*    Report to work no later than 6:00am Election Day.
*    Chief Judges must pick up election supplies at Board office day before election; must also return supplies and election results to Board office (for which they are compensated accordingly).
*    Open/Unlock voting machines.
*    Check voter eligibility.
*    Assist voters when requested.
*    Close voting machines at close of Polls.
*    Polls close at 7:30pm; must remain until all work is completed.

Who do I contact to become a precinct official?
Precinct officials may be recommended by the political parties and are appointed by the Board of Elections for a two-year term, which begins in August of odd-numbered years.
Each polling place is staffed with one Chief Judge, two Judges (one from each political party), and if needed, an appropriate number of Assistants.
Once recommended, the Board of Elections makes the appointments. The two Judges and Assistants represent both parties.
