Museum Collections:
The Museum maintains a permanent collection of over 10,000 artifacts, archival items and images. These holdings were for the most part donated by local citizens and are the foundation for our exhibits and related programming. We also maintain several special collections that are available to the public for research. These include:
- Collected papers from
- Badgett Family (southern Davidson County)
- Tussey Family
- Davis Family
- Moffitt Family
- African-American source material –
- Holt Family Plantation Commonplace Book, containing a list of slaves, ca. 1850
- History of Slavery in Davidson County – M. Sandrock
- Post Card Collection
- Image collection containing documentary photographs made by various local photographers
The Museum has provided source materials for researchers at PBS, for local and national writers, as well as many local and regional projects , such as the Barbeque Festival, held annually in Lexington - The Barbecue Capital of the World! If you would like to access these collections for your own research, calling beforehand is strongly recommended so we may better serve you while serving our regular visitors. No materials may be checked out, but some materials may be copied (25 cents per page). Scans are available on a limited basis, and there is a fee. The staff conducts all searches of the collection, and we maintain the right to refuse access to items deemed too fragile to be handled or copied.
