Established in 1979, the National Conservation Foundation (NCF) Envirothon Competition is a North American Event. It was hosted this year by the Nebraska Envirothon and was conducted July 26th – July 28th. The NCF Envirothon is a hands-on annual environmental, problem-solving competition that builds leadership skills for high school students from participating States and Canadian provinces who won their Regional, State or Provincial event.
Participating teams are trained and tested in diverse environmental issues, ecosystems, and topography in different locations each year. Teams work collaboratively throughout the event and compete for recognition and scholarships by demonstrating their knowledge of environmental science and natural resource management in five natural resource areas. Teams are evaluated on their performance at each of the categories for their knowledge in Soils/Land Use, Aquatic Ecology, Forestry, Wildlife, Current Environmental Issues, and are challenged to develop an oral presentation addressing a practical natural resource scenario.
The Oral Presentations are an important component of the competition. Being able to orally communicate natural resource material is crucial in addressing environmental problems and issues, particularly in situations and scenarios where collaborative efforts are required to develop practical solutions.
